Space Curator Studio acquires select lighting pieces from Coote & Wench, expanding its vision in curated design
Johannesburg, South Africa — Space Curator Studio is pleased to announce the acquisition of a selection of luxury table lamps and wall lights from the esteemed design house Coote & Wench, following their recent closure. This marks a meaningful step in the studio’s evolution and fulfils a long-standing vision of founders Michael Kewley and Norman Gibson—visionaries with decades of experience in creating and curating exceptional spaces.
In addition to acquiring a curated selection of Coote & Wench's distinguished lighting pieces, Space Curator Studio is delighted to welcome key members of the Coote & Wench team to the studio, ensuring continuity in design excellence and craftsmanship as their legacy lives on in a new chapter.
The integration of these iconic lighting pieces enhances the studio’s multidisciplinary approach, which is built around three core pillars:
-
DESIGN
Focused on interiors and bespoke craftsmanship, this division not only manufactures handcrafted metal furniture—such as mirrors, tables, consoles, garden walkways, and outdoor lanterns—but also offers a full-spectrum design service. From conceptualization and planning through to project management and final implementation, Space Curator Studio manages interior and bespoke architectural projects from start to finish, delivering cohesive, beautiful spaces with purpose and personality. -
LIGHTING
Featuring the newly acquired Coote & Wench lighting selection, this division also specializes in bespoke lighting design and manufacturing, offering tailored solutions for both residential and commercial environments. -
SLVGD
A curatorial effort dedicated to sourcing and restoring timeless furniture, SLVGD gives new life to distinctive pieces that bring depth and history to contemporary interiors.
“Coote & Wench was known for its refined aesthetic and uncompromising quality,” say Michael Kewley and Norman Gibson. “We’re proud to continue a part of their story, welcome their team into our studio, and stay true to our mission of delivering considered, lasting design.”
Operating from a primary workshop in Kya Sands, Johannesburg, and a satellite studio in Morningside, Johannesburg, Space Curator Studio works closely with retail clients, interior decorators, game lodges, hotels, restaurants, and other partners who value excellence in design and craftsmanship.
